5 Questions For Fans – Josh Nichols
Welcome to the long awaited 5th run of 5 Questions For Fans where we’ll hear from Josh Nichols, who was selected by Ryin. Josh lives in The Woodlands, drills really deep wells in the ocean, and doesn’t have a lot of free time on his hands.
1) If you had to pick 2 albums that you would be the only music you could listen to from now on, which would they be?
2) When was the first time you realized that music was going to be an impacting force in your life? Or perhaps a “turning moment” in your love of music.
I was in college at Texas Tech when Pat Green (we were actually in the same fraternity; separated by a couple of years) and Cory Morrow were just starting out and I was listening to them and REK and Jack Ingram all the time. I actually DESPISED mainstream country music when I was in high school and college and listened to mostly rap (not much has changed) but there was just something different about this scene. The energy at the shows was incredible. That was about all I knew about “Texas Country”.
Really the “turning point” though was in 2001 when I was living in Amarillo. A guy from Okie State that I worked with had given me some bootleg CD’s by a couple of guys named Boland and Canada and I saw CCRw at the Brickhouse with about 100 people when they still hadn’t broke out in Texas so they were playing there at least once a month. I started trying to find everything I could by them on Limewire and ended up coming across Reckless Kelly. By the time I moved to Houston later that year, it had completely snow balled. When my ex and I split up in 2002, I suddenly had a lot of free time on my hands and started going to every concert that was within 6 hours (ish) of my house.
3) Do you have any words to live by… something written in a song or spoken/quoted from a musician?
Let me get back to you on that one.
4) Any concert/road trip/meet & greet/restaurant/hotel advice to share? Choose one…
No matter what, someone, somewhere close, can always be harassed into going on a road trip with you. If not, don’t ever be afraid to go by yourself. I have made a lot of good friends that way.
5) Tell us a story that sticks out in your mind when you think about all your experiences in this music scene.
I have about a million stories I could tell. Like the time I road tripped to Austin to see The Lost Trailers after I saw them for the first time ever in Grapevine two days earlier and ended up at Blamo’s house (KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. SLAM!!!!!), or the time I talked Cori and Kristin into going to College Station with me to see Pat Green, turned around and came back over night, went to work, and then turned right back around and went to College Station again later that afternoon, or the time we flew to NYC to see Randy Rogers and Brady Black open for Dierks Bentley in Times Square…… Well, you get the picture. The one story that sticks out in my mind is the one that Tank often tells – in 2005, which was our 2nd year to go to Steamboat, we agreed to room with a couple of guys we didn’t know and to this day, one of those guys (Tank) has been a brother to me. Most of my great friendships have been spawned from this scene.
Who should I ask these questions to next?
For the next set of questions I will throw it out to Lori.
Previously, 5 Questions for Ryin Jones, Heather Jank, Meg Ruffing and Suzy Johnson.

Wholeheartedly agree on the roadtrip tip.
Interesting … didn’t know that Nichols and I were in scAmarillo around the same time. Somehow, this information frightens me and makes me want to review the drunken photo archives.

yeah, it’s back!
I think I met you for the first time at the PG College Station show. I was on TX soil for about 17 hours on that trip!
