A Myspace Mixtape
Inspired by the Houston Press Music Blog, I decided to put together my own version of a Myspace Mixtape. Trolling through the massive amounts of myspace “artists”, I’ve found a ton of music that made it abundantly clear that recording an mp3 and uploading a file to myspace… does not make you a good musician. So to help hone in on some goods ones, here’s a myspace mixtape that I would dub a thousand copies and hand out at the bars. That is, if anyone still had a cassette deck. So, in no particular order, the first five that come to mind are…
Matt Powell, “Dandelion”
Currently one of my favorite songs off Powell’s new album. It has a catchy beat and rock solid Matt Powell lyrics that we’ve all loved over the years.
Dustin Kensrue, “Please Come Home”
This guy is probably unknown to the majority of country music fans, but he has the songwriting skills and voice to make anyone with a pair of ears and soul to take notice. Please Come Home is an awesome song that mirrors the Prodigal Son and his return home. Along those same lines… take a listen to his Go Tell It On The Mountain… the percussion at the end is awesome.
Ryan Bingham, “Bread & Water”
No road trip is complete with out this one, especially when you need that extra boost of energy at like 3:00AM. The song takes the listener on a journey through the ins and outs of a life of a drifter that has seen it all.
The Black Crowes, “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution”
This song is the new single off the upcoming album to be released on March 4th. It’s vintage Crowes mixed with a modern attitude.
Bleu Edmondson, “The Echo”
Bleu’s latest album was a homerun from the first song to the last and the standout song for me was “The Echo”. Bleu delivers the lyrics in typical Bruce Springsteen-esque form… Gritty, Solid and most of all.. Truthful.
