Hayes Carll – Hide Me

Hayes performed this song on Austin City Limits (full show here) as the closer for his set and I can’t think of a better one that embodies the songwriting and delivery skills he has honed over the years. If this song is any remote indication of what the upcoming album has in store, Hayes better start clearing the shelf for the recognition awards he’ll be receiving. Overall, it leaves me with a great sense of hope for true and honest songwriting.

I’ve been a fan of Hayes for years and while he can still write songs that make you laugh, this song reminds you that he can also write one that awakes the unknown emotions in you. This song grabbed my attention from the very first note and lines like “I can’t lose what was not mine” left me hanging on every next word.

“Hide Me” by Hayes Carll

After all these years of running around
of flying high and falling down
Well the time has come at last
to rest my heart and ease my past

I’m gonna leave these blues behind
for some other fool to find
He don’t care and I won’t mind
Hide me, babe, Hide me, babe

Darlin’ don’t you cry tonight
The moon is full and the world is right
I’ve loved more than my share
I took the pain and I called it fair

So I’m gonna lay down all my fears,
my highway shoes, and my rambling tears
They can shout it down the line
I can’t lose what was not mine

I raise my glass and make a toast
We’re better than some, a little harder than most
We left a mark on every town,
chased our dreams, held our ground

But I can’t do those things no more
not the way I done before
The same winds that brought me through
can take me back the same way too

After all these years of running around
of flying high and falling down
Well the time has come at last
to rest my heart and ease my past

I’m gonna leave these blues behind
for some other fool to find
He don’t care and I won’t mind
Hide me, babe, Hide me, babe
