Hitchin’ into Houston, party in the highrise…

The Road Kings… When I hear that name spoken, the words that immediately come to mind are “A good freaking time.” 10 years ago the Texas/Red Dirt music scene was in it’s infancy, leaving me with plenty of free time to catch a lot of local bands around Houston. So one Friday night some friends and I went out to one of our favorite venues, The Satellite Lounge, and it took all of about 1 song before I was instantly a fan.

Plain and simple its a hard nosed rockabilly band that has some of the best energy that I’ve ever seen and backed by even better musicians. It’s a 3 piece, made up of Jesse Dayton - lead/vocals, Jason Burns - Doghouse Bass and Eric Tucker - Drums. As the way of some bands they all went their separate ways to pursue bands/business that better suited them, but they never ceased to ever be The Road Kings. They get together 2-3 times a year and pack the venue with all our old friends and new ones that they have picked up along the way.

Road Kings

Last night was the 2nd show they’ve played this year and it was better than ever! Burns is a wild man on that bass.. I love it when he stands up on it and goes to town! I got to share it with several of the folks I frequent Texas Music shows with and they all loved it as much as I do!

Keep your tastes eclectic! Don’t be rat holed into one genre and get out and see the Road Kings! They are working on a new album and I’d expect some sort of tour to follow.
