I was wrong… and haven’t been happier
Well.. apparently I got called out last night.
Let me give you a little backstory. Pat Green has a song on his very first album, called West Texas Holiday, that is about simple life and hunting in Texas. Back when I first started listening to him this song was a common one in the setlist… well… because he only had one album out. As Pat grew and grew into the guy we know and love now, he obviously dropped it from the rotation… and it’s been gone for many many years. I made a comment over on Galleywinter about how I’d riot if I didn’t hear West Texas Holiday and then further kept the joke going by saying that he probably doesn’t even know the words anymore.
Well.. Pat came out and played a little West Texas Holiday for the first song of the encore and during it he addressed me by saying that because I said he didn’t know the words… he was proving me wrong. I don’t think anything could be righter in the state of Texas for me right now.
For me, that song is one that I always think of when I think of my early days of Texas Music. I did a lot of hunting back then and the song just kind of struck a chord with me back when the only album out was Dancehall Dreamer. I’m well aware that West Texas Holiday doesn’t hold a candle to most of the great music he’s put out. I would never say that WTH should have made it to #1 across the county… I’m not that naive. But for me… that song means more to me than any other. It will always a spot in my heart and soul as a starting point not only for Pat.. but also for me. Great music doesn’t just make you cry or make you sit and stare into space thinking deeply about your life… it also can make you extremely happy. And that is what this song is about.
So thanks Pat, for the reminder that you are still the guy you’ve always been. I’ll eat that humble pie in front of the sold out crowd any day of the week. I think us Texans take things a little personal sometimes and last night was a great reminder that while the vision is alot larger than Texas, we still get the best shows and a reminder that he still loves us.
If it flies, it dies….

[...] The Eye of the Hurricane blogger Ryan is a fan of Pat Green and his song “West Texas Holiday,” off of his first album, which used to be featured regularly in his set list. As Green grew in stature, the song was dropped from the live shows, much to the chagrin of Ryan. So he facetiously mentioned on the Galleywinter forums that he’d riot if Green didn’t play the song at an upcoming concert he was planning to attend, and took it a step further by saying that Green probably didn’t remember the words. Make your way over to The Eye of the Hurricane to find out what happened next. [...]

Brady from The 9513 and I were sitting in Gruene Hall waiting for Reckless to start Saturday night, and when I looked out the window, I saw Pat walking from the Grist Mill, holding his daughter and just hanging out. I was surprised and I think its cool that he still seems to be a “normal guy”, even though he has become such a big star….

I hate that I missed the show…for that reason alone. Glad to hear it was a great show and that he still loves us!
