Jamie Wilson – Michael

When I first first heard this song over a year ago, I was struck at how it has an amazing melody… slow and penetrating with a voice that doesn’t let you stop listening. And lately as I’ve listened, the lyrics have slowly begun to pierce me and I really couldn’t figure out why, until I asked Jamie Wilson what this song really meant.

I wrote that song on the day that I realized that my brother was going to prison. We had been really trying to get him off with just probation, but I called him one day and just asked him what he wanted to do. He said that he’d rather we just stopped trying and let him do his time. That nothing that can happen in there is worse than what he thinks about everyday anyway. So, I hung up the phone and wrote that song, It just kind of happened like that. Like one fluid motion. ~ Jamie Wilson

Growing up… my step-dad, Jeff, made a huge impact on my life, but unfortunately he passed away about 5 years ago. This song has pulled a lot of feelings out of me when I think about not having him around. You go through life respecting someone and when they suddenly leave you… you feel like there is nothing to replace them. Until you realize the impact and things you learned from them, never really left you…

Michael, when the june bugs fall on summertime -
Michael, well, you know that I’m alright
Michael, I can hear your sweet voice soothing me,
at the table in the middle of the night

Michael, when the fireflies are dancing,
and the flowers come and go without a sound
Do you know I’m still hoping you will answer me,
even when I look and you are not around?

All the things you never said, you said as you walked so tall
Guess you never were that quiet after all

And all the books you read, they seem to have forgotten
that you can’t find your way into them all
You’re a cowboy riding off into the sunset,
like a picture you’ve got painted on your wall

And the gypsy queen, she’ll find a way to find you.
And she’ll take you across the land and through the air
And like a scene from long ago you’ll leave behind you –
a poem and a picture and a prayer

All the things you never said, you said as you walked so tall
Guess you never were that quiet after all

Michael, I ain’t ever been so lonely. I guess somehow I ain’t ever been alone
If you come tomorrow, meet me in the morning time,
for to hold my hand and walk with me back home
If you come tomorrow, meet me in the morning,
for to hold my hand and walk with me back home
