Jason Eady – Redemption

I’ve had this song in my head all weekend and each time I hear it, it haunts me deep down where my soul lives. Redemption seems to be an amazingly told story of cheating, lies, deception and the lengths we go to for redemption. Don’t take this to be a typical pop country version of a cheating heart set to a new riff. Even as I listen to it right now, I hear more depth to each line.. and some lines… I don’t even understand yet what they mean to the entire tale. It’s dark and thoughtful, but most of all heart-breakingly real.

There’s a picture on the table, broken glass on the floor
A cigarette in my hand I’m going off to war
Images of silhouettes plastered on my brain
Bitter taste on my tongue, familiar mixed with pain
I’m driving down the highway, shadows in headlights
Justice dressed in sheets of gray with trails of black and white

A man can be a diamond a man can be a steal
A man can be a poet and not have the words to feel
Mercy is a preacher held captive under fire
Redemption smells like gasoline and burns like desire

She steps out under cover, turns around and waves
I light up that cigarette and I watch her drive away
Doors can open easy but sometimes they close hard
I left him laying where I found him and I got back in my car
She’s already gone to bed by the time that I get home
I make myself some coffee and I sit up alone

A man can be a diamond a man can be a steal
A man can be a poet and not have the words to feel
Mercy is a preacher held captive under fire
Redemption smells like gasoline and burns like desire

The sunshine in the morning feels like water on my bones
I hear her through the walls as she screams into the phone
There’s a picture on the table, broken glass on the floor
A pistol in my gripping hand, I open up the door

I listened to this song for a long time before I realized what it was about. I’m still not sure I fully know what it’s about. But it’s chilling. I think this band is probably one of the most underrated bands in Texas right now.

The thing that I love about this song is that I can close my eyes and listen and I can not only see the story being told… but I can FEEL the pain that this guy is going through.

That is just God given talent right there.

I agree Meg, the band is underrated. Everytime I hear them, I like them more and more. It’s amazing to me that someone can create like that.

[...] you listen to those, go check out Jason Eady’s dark tale of cheating and redemption titled simply, “Redemption.” It feels almost like it could be the great-grandchild of Lefty [...]

A few weeks ago I was listening to the radio in Dallas and I was drawn in by a song that I hadnt heard before. I kept listening and kept loving the song more and more. When he kicked into the chorus, he sang the words “Wild Eyed Serenade” and I knew then who it was, thanks to simply knowing it was the title of his album. Now, this song really makes me kick myself for not having picked it up already and for being so ignorant about what is going on right here with this soon-to-be star from our home state!
