Johnny Cash and Jesus

I’ve been wanting to write about this for a long time, but it just keeps alluding me so I’m going to take Good Friday and write a little something close to home. About a year ago I was at our church down here in Sugar Land where the worship music isn’t a bunch of old lady’s in a choir and an out of tune pipe organ. Being that music is a big part of my life, it’s fairly important to me that the church I attend have music that is not only good, but also relevant to our lives and this one does a great job. The guy that leads Worship for the church,Tim Barosh, and I have been friends for almost 8 years now and I’ve learned that’s he’s a big country music fan.. both old school and new. One Sunday he introduces a song by saying he was listening to it and listening to how true the words rang in his ears and wanted to play it for the congregation.

I heard this “thump.. thump…” of the drums and it sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. Then he let loose this low note out of his mouth and I knew in a heartbeat it was Johnny cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”. I love going to a relevant church…. check it out… he does more justice to Cash than most these guys in the Texas Music scene that habitually murder “Folsom Prison”.

God’s Gonna Cut You Down - performed by Tim Barosh
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, The gambler, The back biter
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut ‘em down
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut ‘em down

Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
My head’s been wet with the midnight dew
I’ve been down on bended knee talkin’ to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel’s feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, “Son go do My will!”

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, The gambler, The back biter
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut ‘em down
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut ‘em down

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin’ in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What’s done in the dark will be brought to the light

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut you down
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut you down
Tell ‘em that God’s gonna cut you down

I was listening to this very song when I stumbled upon this post. Crazy stuff! That’s cool that they’d play Johnny Cash at your church. I was listening to Josh Turner earlier today when “The Way He Was Raised” came on and I was thinking about how it’d be a cool song to play in church. I like the old time hymns and whatnot, but we usually get some of the newish stuff at our church that they pass out at music seminars and it’s just not very exciting.
