My Birthday – Stoney LaRue

I spent my birthday at the Firehouse with alot of my closest friends from Galleywinter. Stoney is such an awesome person. I don’t think I’ve ever met a person quite like him. He’s one of the few people that respects music. So many of the artists these days play music because they are good at it. Stoney plays music becuase he loves it.. he just happens to be real good at it, too. most of the shows I’ve been to I think we have just passed eeach other and not had the full time to really stop and say hi. But last night it was like it was before anyone knew the name Stoney LaRue. I try to never press myself around those guys becuase they are making a living and I just like to thank them and be on my way. They aren’t getting paid to be my friend. Most people probably think they are entitled to that though. I don’t go over for Sunday brunch and play with his kids and I probably never will.. but it feels good to know that Stoney and I are on the same page and share a little more than “sign my CD”. I can’t express how thrilled I am to have Steve playing in that band. I always wondered way back when he played with Django if he left the band would I still go see him play just becuase we were friends. I’m just glad to know that answer is yes even though I’d be seeing Stoney anyway. I’m not sure where all the Stoney LaRue lovefest came from but I guess he’s my favorite artists and his show is on my mind.

The review as posted on GW:
What a great birthday night! I had a surprise birthday dinner before the show which just set the pcae for the whole night. I really appreciate all that came out to celebrate with me and all the new GW people that I met at the show! You guys all made this show that much better for me! It seemed like there were a bunch of people out of town, but we held the Rodney section down for you! Wish you were there!

As for the show itself, it was incredible. There were all the standard songs that Stoney has been playing lately plus a few such as the new cover of Oklahoma Breakdown that they are doing. That is such an awesome song. He also played Far From Being Gone (old Medicene Show song) which I really hope is a constant addition to the set list. Hearing Stoney sing that one is like seeing the sun break through on a cloudy day. There was a little bit of Amazing Grace and the Star Spangled Banner in there and at some point a Happy Birthday. Steve Littleton brought out a full B3 Hammond that sounded incredible. It was probably one of the best Firehouse shows I’ve seen.
