Reality

A few weeks ago I set my TiVo to automatically record the movie Crossroads. No.. not the Brittany Spears one… you know, the Ralph Machio 80’s classic. This week it automatically recorded CMT’s Crossroads and my first thought was, “I wonder if it is any worse than the Kenny Rogers/Lionel Richie Trainwreck that I saw commercials for”. I pushed play and realized that I’ve actually seen this one before. It’s the Hank Williams, Jr/Kid Rock so I figured I’d watch it again because I remember that it was pretty good.
There is a point when they sing a goofy song that called “In Country Music we just don’t use the F-Word”. Good stuff and kind of a knock on Hank III and Kid Rock. Anyway, midway through the song they start laughing and sing the following:
I think it’s time for basics, roots, and reality.
I thought that was awesome. I would have loved to see that pretty boy host’s face when he realized they were talking 99% of the music in the CMT top 20. I think above all, it’s reassuring that we’re not stuck within our own little community here in Texas Music, just blindly thinking that everything else sucks. I’ve often wondered to myself when I hear the country music that is on the radio, “Am I a music snob?” The statement like the one that Kid Rock and Hank made just reassures me that most of that mainstream music just stinks. I mean you have Kid Rock that grew up a white rapper and is singing country music because he likes what comes from it’s soul. And then you have Hank, which became an out and a legend because he sang and wrote songs that were not the mainstream, but rather came from the soul. Those are two pretty good sources of music quality if you ask me. I wonder what Kid Rock and Hank would say about what’s going on around Texas. With the directions and attention the latest round of albums is receiving, I think we may find out soon.
