Steamboat 09 – Day 3
Day 3 got off to a late start for me due to lack of sleep the previous nights. I opted for a much needed nap while friends soaked in the hot tub. By the time I was awake and moving I realized that I was going to miss The Rustlanders and Corb Lund playing the early shows. I’ve seen The Rustlanders but was extremely upset to have to miss Corb Lund becuase I’ve heard nothing but good things about him. Good thing that he’s playing again during this week!
So our whole crew had a huge choice to see Adam Hood or Ryan Bingham for the evening shows and most went to see Bingham since Hood is playing two shows this week. Everyone pretty knows about my Bingham man-crush so I’ll spare you all the gushing and stick to the facts. They hit the stage like a Kansas tornado and played amazingly well for not having many shows recently. All I could hear was people saying things like “Who is this guy, I need more…”. It was also really cool to hear a lot of new stuff that is coming on the new album. I’m really hoping Bluebird makes the final cut as I love that song. He ended the show with the classic Bread & Water and slide guitar.
So then the next big choice of the night came up (lots of them to make this year).. do we see Boland or RRB or head over for the intimate acoustic show with Muzzie Braun. Everyone split up and I opted for Boland. I can’t attest to any of the other shows other than the twitters I saw coming through, which were all saying very good things. It’s very cliche to say, so I don;t say this lightly, but I think Boland might have played the best show I’ve ever seen him play. The sound was spot on in the Grand and his voice pierced through every note. It’s amazing to see a man that had such a rough 2008 with all the vocal chord trauma and surgery, get up on stage and sound so crystal clear. His music really took me to a place that reminded me that music isn’t something that can be explained with words or writing… it’s a God given expression that hits you in ways you don’t expect.
