Very hard subject to really draw a line on. When i tell people about this music living up here in Michigan i sometimes without thinking hard about it just refer to it as country, but then people try and connect it to Nashville and that cant be done. So then i will expand that and say it mostly music from Texas but its also called red dirt music, the problem i have with referring to it as Texas country is that not all of it is from texas, like someone earlier said, Chris knight is an honorary Texan but still lives in Slaughters Kentucky and then alot of the bands that are ambassadors of this genre started out in Stillwater Oklahoma, some still live around the area and some have migrated to Texas, but to single one state out isnt all that fair to those who stick it out in Oklahoma. So i guess that makes the term red dirt music a broader reference and gives a person coming into this style of music an idea of the scope of it, a regional way of thinking instead of focusing on one state. just my thoughts on it all i guess.

@Lata

The Geographic problem you speak of gets a lot larger when you realize that most of the old Stillwater folks are in Texas now. AND they've influenced a whole generation of songwriters with that "approach". It's not as clear cut as geography I'm afraid.

Hang on a second. Although Red Dirt music narrows things down from just Texas music...there is a geographic problem there too. Red Dirt music is originally from Stillwter, Oklahoma. Many people have argued that there isn't even such a thing as Red Dirt Music but there is...and it's not the same as alternative country, it's not Indie rock/country and it basically cannot be defined as a sound genre. What makes Red Dirt Music is the method, the approach and the attitude. Without it, all you're going to get is different sound blends. Perhaps it's best you keep using Texas Music for describe Texas Music

By that logic you should just call it "music". Seems a bit shallow and generic to me.. which is the exact opposite of what we are talking about.

You can just call it "Country" and not worry about having your own precious sub-domain.
