The “I should be in Austin” post
So today Ryan Bingham takes the famous stage at Austin City Limits to film his concert that will be broadcast to people across the nation. My good friend Suzy got a pair of tickets last minute and offered me one. But my schedule this week is extremely hectic and I need to spend some time at home as well as honoring some prior commitments. I know what you’re thinking… “Ryan is choosing responsibility over music… who is this person?!?!” it’s all good… being grown up comes with it’s sacrifices.
So I sit here awake at night watching videos and listening to music and I got to thinking… I know I’m all over the Bingham bandwagon these days… but how did YOU find out about Bingham and what is it you like about him?
I’ll start! My buddy Josh had been twisting my ears about him for months and I guess it was about 3 or so years ago in Steamboat I caught my first show. It ranks up there as top 5 shows I’ve had the most fun at, by far! Then maybe a year later, Bingham played Ever Wonder Why solo on stage in a dim lit room at a Townes Van Zandt tribute and it was at that point my views on music were completely changed. The way he writes and tells a story.. it’s penetrating… deep down to where your soul lives. It’s how music is supposed to be done.
Now it’s your turn!

Over the course of late 2006 and early 2007,I had seen his name here and there on concert listings, and had even read where he had been signed to lost hihghway. I even checked his myspace occasioanlly up until pickin for preemies 2007 in grapevine. It was then that I really figured it out. He shared the stag with Adam Hood, Kozelsky and Walt Wilkins. They were all great, but Bingham tore the place down with Southside of Heaven, Snake Eyes(?), and especially Sunrise. I have been hooked ever since!

I have Ms. Joni to thank for my introduction to Bingham. It was at a Clubhouse show when they were actually still at the apartment clubhouse in Fort Worth back in 2002. He played there often, and it wasn’t often that I misses a clubhouse show back then. That was back when it was just Bingham and his guitar. I’ve been a fan ever since.

The more I think about it, the more certain I am it was Joni and the Clubhouse Concerts that introduced me to Bingham’s music. That was definitely the first place I saw him perform.

Steamboat 2007, I was cold, tired and I just wanted to go to a show where I didn’t have to stand. So, I tagged along with Josh and Ryan to a Townes Van Zandt tribute. Bingham sang and played his guitar as if he were the only one in the room. He hardly looked at the audience. I never was really into music as much until then. Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if they are showing you the way. That’s how I felt with Bingham that night.

I found Ryan Bingham’s music thru GW and a burned CD, not sure who got me that first copy of Dead Horses. I honestly can’t remember but it was about Feb. 07. I listened to that thing for months until Mescalito came out. Ryan finally played in Seattle Nov. of 07. He’s easily been my favorite ever since. My favorite thing is you can’t ignore him or his voice. He has a commanding presence whether you are just listening to a recording or he’s playing live in the same room as you. I’m convinced Ryan’s star is much bigger than music….we shall see!

My first Bingham show was Steamboat 07. We were running late to his show due to someone else playing in the big tent I believe. I remember walking into the Grand trying to figure out what was going on. He was ending a song, playing his electric when I walked in. The next song with his acoustic. I’ll never forget it…I was absolutely speechless. He grabbed my attention like never before. To this day, it still happens. Every time.

My very first Bingham was Cain’s Ballroom, Tulsa, OK, (*swoon*)in Nov of 2007. He opened for the Truckers. I had heard his name on GW, but had never heard one note of his music. Ah-May-ZING!!! I think I drooled on myself. :) Been addicted ever since.
Great Post Ryan!
